I have a 2005 C6 (manual transmission) that has developed a loud gear whining noise in the last couple of weeks. It has 50K miles on it. The whining noise only happens during steady pedal or acceleration not deceleration or clutch depressed. It can begin at 35 mph in 3rd but doesn't start until 40+ mph or higher in 4/5/6th.
At 15K miles I had an after market 4:10 rear end installed that began to whine during decel in 5th and 6th gear immediately after install. Got no help from installer or builder - another story. This problem has been replaced with the above.
Both transmission and transaxle have received proper maintenance and are not low on fluid. Transmission and throw out bearing are original. Car is DD and not abused in any way.
Have emailed RPM Transmission in Indiana with a diagnosis request. They are NOT the original builder who is also located in Indiana. Nor are they the original installer.
Transmission or Differential. There is no transaxle in a Corvette. The transmission is a separate case with it's own fluid and the differential is another separate case with it's own fluid.
the problem is probably realated to the 4.10 gears or their installation.

10-4, my service manual describes the transmission in the transmission/transaxle section and the differential in the driveline/axle section under rear drive axle. Transmission and differential titles work better.
Whining generally is the ring and pinion gears just eating each other up. I would try and get a flexible magnet in the fill hole and see if there is any metal debris in the case.
Also, check to make sure it's not a rear hub noise.

I will do a complete draining and check for metal.

I checked the rear axle nuts and they are tight and in the original position.
I've been having the same issue. Check out this thread, it has some more info also offered by RK. I'll have to try the thicker fluid myself to see if that helps with noise.
Amsoil 75w140 on it's way. I'll report back with the results.
Honestly, if it's not in danger of exploding on me anytime soon, I can live with the noise. The exhaust, music, and window-down cruising take care of the problem.
