On a 2005 with manual transmission is there any way to bypass having to have the car in reverse prior to starting it? I know they do not have it on the 2006.
Thx

It starts in any gear, but it won't shut off unless it's in reverse. When the car is shut off you can pop it out of reverse and it'll start, so long as you depress the clutch, regardless of what gear its in.
If you really wanted to you could jump out the harness that tells the car it's in reverse and put a toggle switch on it to tell the car it's in reverse, but it would be quite a hassle since the wiring is back on top of the transmission. I cannot imagine why you would want to do this but let us know if there's a reason.
It's a good idea to shut off the car in reverse anyway - it's the steepest gear and thus does the best job of holding the car in one place should your parking brake fail or you forget to apply the parking brake properly.
