i have an 09 coupe manual 6spd. from my research i see either redline, royal purple, or amsoil is recommended for the transmission fluid change. i recently changed from the stock factory fill to royal purple synchromax as i could not find amsoil or redline in my area. i now get a grinding on 5th gear it seems when not fully warmed up. i think it shifts better in the other gears compared to stock but that grinding really irks me especially after spending 70 bucks to change perfectly good fluid. obviously there will be those who want to riducule me for changing fluid but does anyone share a similar experience? will amsoil or redline cure this issue and is it a problem to do a simple drain and re-fill at this point with another product even through royal purple was introduced into the system?
Redline and AMSOIL will be compatible with the RP as all are full synthetics. I don't know if a change to another make fluid will solve your problem. I have used both REDLINE D4-ATF (01Z06) and AMSOIL ATF (06Z06) without seeing any improvement in shifting compared to the factory fluid. However, if you do want to try a non-RP product, I would recommend the following: AMSOIL Torque Drive DEX III ATF product in 1 gal (4qts) jug which I will used in my ZR1 at 20k or so miles. I originally put RP synchromax in my Z06 and immediately it was much worse than the factory fill. I drove it 90 miles and then drained it out and put in Mobil1 DEXIII synthetic ATF.
The Mobil1 is a little better when cold then the factory fill, but seems to be about the same when warmed up.

Traded several PMs on this topic with the OP, but for others reading the thread and interested in trying the Torque Drive ATF, more than happy to get AMSOIL products for forum members at dealer wholesale pricing, about 25% below retail, via the AMSOIL Preferred Customer Program. Drop me a PM if interested.
OP, 5th has always been super notchy on these trannies, and mine ('12 GS here) is no exception. Not particularly satisfying to shift into, but at least never a grind in my case. If there's a grind, then something is not right, and I doubt fluid has anything to do with that, especially since it's the only one. Having said that, I also didn't like RP Synchromax on the T56, so will never use it again. I used Amsoil TorqueDrive on the GS to try to cure a cold 'crunch' on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, but didn't help (I went around that issue by pausing those shifts for 2 miles or so). I noticed a very slight difference when hot, but nothing to write home about. I also wanted the non-synthetic fluid out of there, along with any break-in crap in the fluid, so replaced it at 3K miles, along with the differential oil (Dexron LS), which cured the grinding at full lock. Good luck with your issue.
is the GM stock fluid synthetic or just regular? is amsoil considered an upgrade?
To my knowledge, the GM DEXRON III & VI transmission fluids have always been non-synthetic so AMSOIL, Redline, RP, Mobil-1, etc, would be an upgrade for sure.
