Based on a couple dozen prior threads....

- 500 miles, you're late
- 1000 miles, you're late
- 1500 miles, you're late
- 2000 miles, you're late
- 3000 miles, you have time
- Use the oil life monitor
- etc

Pick your poison

When the % of oil life left that shows up on the DIC says something between 5% and 10%. What is it showing now?

Helpful aren't they?

Depends on you and how **** a car guy, or gal, you are.

Many here like to change out the original factory fill at 1000 miles then do regular changes every 3000 or 5000 miles, OR just follow the Oil Life Monitor and change about when JimTN mentioned above. Keeping in mind the general recommendation to change once a year regardless of mileage.

Do it now, and install magnetic drain plug(s) as needed.

I would read the owners manual and follow it's advice. That's what I do. In my case it's once a year including the first change.

It's once year, or when the oil monitor reads 20%, I change it. Know need to waste money, when it doesn't call for it.

No, not based on cycles and mileage.

It is based on engine revolutions and engine temperature, and not on
mileage.

Owner's manual tells you that.

Hey Prican,

I looked in the manual and on page 10-19 it states:

Engine Oil Life System
When to Change Engine Oil This vehicle has a computer that
indicates when to change the engine oil and filter. This is based on a combination of factors which include engine revolutions, engine temperature, and miles driven. Based on driving conditions, the mileage at which an oil change is indicated can vary considerably. For the oil life system to work properly, the system must be reset every time the oil is changed. Z06, ZR1, manual transmission Grand Sport Coupe, and 427 Convertible models have a racetrack-ready dry sump engine lubrication system. This high-performance system operates differently than a standard engine lubrication system and requires a
special procedure when changing the engine oil and filter. See Engine Oil on page 10‑13.
When the system has calculated that oil life has been diminished, it indicates that an oil change is necessary. A CHANGE ENGINE OIL message comes on. Change the oil as soon as possible within the next 1 000 km (600 mi). It is possible that, if driving under the
best conditions, the oil life system might indicate that an oil change is not necessary for up to a year. The engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and, at this time, the system must be reset. Your dealer has trained service people who will perform this work and reset the system. It is also important to check the oil regularly over the course of an oil drain interval and keep it at the proper level.

Just FYI on page 11-3 Required Service Every 12,000km/ 7,5000 mi
. Check engine oil level and oil life percentage. If needed, change engine oil and filter, and
reset oil life system. See Engine Oil on page 10‑13 and Engine Oil Life System on page 10‑19.
. Check engine coolant level. See Engine Coolant on page 10‑26. . Check windshield washer fluid level. See Washer Fluid on page 10‑32.
. Visually inspect windshield wiper blades for wear, cracking, or contamination. See Exterior
Care on page 10‑79. Replace worn or damaged wiper blades. See Wiper Blade Replacement
on page 10‑40.
. Check tire inflation pressures. See Tire Pressure on page 10‑60.
. Inspect tire wear. See Tire Inspection on page 10‑65. . Visually check for fluid leaks.
. Inspect engine air cleaner filter. See Engine Air Cleaner/Filter on page 10‑21.
. Inspect brake system.
. Visually inspect steering, suspension, and chassis components for damaged, loose,
or missing parts or signs of wear. See Exterior Care on page 10‑79.
. Check restraint system components. See Safety System Check on page 3‑13.
. Visually inspect fuel system for damage or leaks. . Visually inspect exhaust system
and nearby heat shields for loose or damaged parts.
. Lubricate body components. See Exterior Care on page 10‑79.
. Check starter switch. See Starter Switch Check on page 10‑38.
. Check automatic transmission shift lock control function. See Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Function Check on page 10‑39.
. Check parking brake and automatic transmission park mechanism. See Park Brake and
P (Park) Mechanism Check on page 10‑39.
. Check accelerator pedal for damage, high effort, or binding. Replace if needed.
. Visually inspect gas strut for signs of wear, cracks, or other damage. Check the hold open ability of the strut. See your dealer if service is required

Sorry for the long post. I hope I helped a little by providing information from the manual. If you would like me to post other excerpts from the manual please let me know. I can find the information quickly and past it for you.

I've had the oil changed at ~1000 mile on every high performance car I've owned. Taking my '13 in next week with 1000 miles and 6 months on it. First 30 months of oil changes are free, so will have the Dealer do them. If they weren't, I'd change it myself about now. Then, once a year or 5k miles. You buy a car for over 50k and worry about $35 for an oil change!?! Maybe it is a "waste" of money, but it's cheap money to waste.

Default Oil change

I just bought a '13 MN6 GS. I was also wondering about the initial oil change. I have heard 'Get the Mobil 1 out of it and ASAP and go w/Amsoil/Royal Purple etc... From others I have heard; Wait at least 1500 miles, because there are certain additives in the 'factory fill' that help w/engine break-in/piston/rings sealing. I don't really know which to do. I would like to change it out and put in Amsoil 0W-30 Signature Series in it, but from the other angle, if there are additives from the factory that assist in engine break-in and what not I should leave it in. Any thoughts?

They haven't put break in additives in oil or used break in oil in ages. I don't even think it was used in the engine of my 65 442 when I took delivery in April of 65. That car had chrome rings. Since then the rings have changed considerably. Mobil 1 is an excellent oil and I have been using it in my Vettes since I purchased my 97. Have a lot of track and street miles on Mobil 1 with no issues. As far as changing the oil follow the Owner's Manual recommendation and you will not go wrong. Everything else is the opinion of people who didn't have the resources or the knowledge base the GM engineers had to work with.

Since I purchased my 97 in May of 97 I have been using the OLM and the once per year guidance to determine when to change oil. I been doing that on all of my GM engines. 3 Corvettes, 1 Tahoe and one Malibu over the last 17 years. No issues with that oil change interval even though I use my cars hard. The Tahoe and the Malibu use Dino oil Vs Mobil 1 so the OLM runs down quicker on them and the max mileage before a change is about half what it is on the Vettes with Mobil 1.

The guideline to change it at least once a year is a good one, even with full synthetic. I bought my '13 GS new at the end of July and it only had 3000 miles on it and over 55% oil life remaining on the DIC when I put it away for the winter. However, the build date was Sept 2012, so the factory oil was over a year old and I changed it out this fall. Assuming your '13 hasn't had an oil change since it was filled at the factory, I'd say it's time.

It depends on what Type of oil you want to use regular Oil or Synthetic. From the factory we get Mobil1.

Surprisingly conventional oil placed 2nd of all oils tested in my link above. These days with modern additive packages synthetic doesn't matter much anymore
