So I was on my merry little way this morning when a pigeon takes off from along side the right side of the road. WHACK! It smacked the side view mirror on the passenger side so hard it knocked the mirror out. It was hanging on by the defrost wires, so I pulled over and disconnected it. Luckily, nothing is broken/damaged(that I can see), nor do I have pigeon blood all over the side of the car. So, I was relieved in that I could fix it when I got home.
As I am home now and looking at it, it looks like it would just pop back in place. NOT!
I'm not sure if I should take the whole assembly out, detach the adhesive from the mirror and try to re-assemble or what.
Anybody with some experience here would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.
Was able to fix it myself. Had to separate the mirror(very carefully) from the plastic holder to which it is adhered to. Then put the control hinges back in place with the little rubber boots over them. Snap everything back in place(very carefully), and re-adhere the mirror in place.
I used a stool as a bench right next to the mirror as it doesn't come off, so I had to work right there at the mirror housing. Two pcs. of wood on top of the stool helped to provide stability.
Currently, I have it taped for pressure against the mirror and will let the adhesive dry overnight.
I used a hair dryer to soften the power of the adhesive for removal, still wasn't easy and I cut my finger on the edge working it off.
Not an easy job, but done, tested and it works again without any noticeable damage.
Effing pigeon!
Good job. Glad you didn't lose the whole mirror assembly. Any pictures?
Sorry, no. I should have for the benefit of the CF, but I was set on repairing it. All I can ponder is that the mirror took one hell of a blow to knock that mirror out. Because getting it back in place took a lot of soft force, if you know what I mean.
I was glad and surprised the whole mirror assembly wasn't trashed!
