Mine just went out yesterday. 2005 60k miles.
Been doing some forum browsing and it seems like they give up rather prematurely.
Something about the chain flexing on downshifts.
I don't RR but I like to heel-toe downshift into fairly high rpms and then rev it out, but this ls2 doesn't seem to like this.
Apparently even double roller chains break, I'd like to find something bullet proof next so I don't have to go through this again, in fact I'd like to make the whole motor bulletproof, BMW M-motor bulletproof.
If that's not possible and I can't drive the hell out of my car for a few years without blowing a motor maybe I should switch back to something made in Munich.
Looks promising. The ATI Super Damper is a bit pricy, I don't know if that's a must, but I'll go with the tensioner and C5-R chain, I've seen it recommended before.[/QUOTE]
That's an oxymoron man . And yes, I owned an E92 M3.
What went wrong with your E92
I'm guessing I basically need new valves too? First time I'm looking at going this far into the motor and I don't really have much tools, but I should probably make a new thread for that.
It seems to happen mostly when UD pulleys are used. When I swapped my pulley, because the factory one failed, I installed a UD but was told by MANY not to engine brake by down shifting. Mine did not break, but my timing gear did, on an upshift. I now run the C5R chain that was recommended to me by MANY.
OP: If your balancer is doing fine, then great, but if you are going to replace it, then use the "Best" IMO. Also check out this thread - http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-t...ould-i-do.html (Please read post #7). These guys know their stuff!!!
you may want to check out this part from Cloyes 9-3658TX3Z, a bit pricey but top of the line. When I did heads and cam went with the one for my later LS2 and an ATI 10% under drive damper, no problems and top quality.

You have the right to go buy anything you could afford. I have 125 k on my ls2 and it is driven hard.
don't remember the exact mileage but my '05 went at ~128,000 miles.
not a broken chain, but the bolt onto cam gear sheared off or something.
i think the dozen or so autocrosses before that put strain on it due to lots of on/off throttles.
anyway good excuse for head n cam and runs stronger now.
my shop uses cloyes on all their cars. if good enough for all their heavily modded vettes with bigger cams, plenty good for me.

This is how I drive all the time. Is this a problem with stock pulleys as well?
ryccoh,

I should know this, but my car is a non-VVT right? I remember when I got on the throttle it felt like something had to first kick into gear before it took off. Maybe it was the chain slipping or flexing actually that sounds kinda silly...
