My second gear wont kick in. The engine power is there; the problem is that the car feels forced if I increase speed since the 2nd gear is not entering. Any insights into this? I am planning on taking it in for service....
Mine's a 2005, and if I start from a stop in 3rd or D, it starts from 1st, and it will then "hesitate" going into second, compared to what I would do if I was driving a stick (my z06), and then go into third rather quickly. It has always been this way.
I usually "manually" shift to avoid this, starting in 2nd. I will start in second (resulting in a smoother, more powerful start, IMO). It won't use 1st at all and then shift from 2nd to 3 and then D. I'm assuming that the way it shifts whilst in D has somewhat the same reasoning behind it as the 1-4 shift crap in order to satisfy the gas tax issue (I actually have no idea if this is true, but seems like a reasonable conclusion?).
If I am in D and floor it from a stop it will not do this as pronouncedly, but will not get me the same acceleration as starting from 2nd. Personally, I like the control that shifting "manually" provides on the A4.
Something must be wrong with both of them, because I can leave mine in 3rd or 4th and it takes off in 1st and you can feel the shifts 2-3 for 3rd and 2-3-4 for D. But my trans has been tuned along with the motor, I also remember it working that same way when stock
Probably not a factor here, but on our 2001;
If you put the selector in 1, it starts in 1 and stays there.
If you put the selector in 2, it starts in 2 and stays there.
If you put the selector in 3 or D, it starts in 1 and upshifts normally until it reaches 3 or 4. The shift from 1 to 2 is slightly abrupt, the shift to 3 comes rather early and is very smooth.
