Default piston pin too large for stock rods.

well I was putting the motor together and got to when I was putting the pistons on the rods and this is what I found. im using auto tec pistons, 4.010 since im bored .10 over. the pins that came with auto tec are .097, the size of the small end on the factory rods are .095. can the bushings be honed .002?

yea, a machine shop should be able to hone the wrist pin bushing to fit the pin

good deal, the machine shop that did the rest of the work ordered the pistons for my build and it came with the .097 pins, not sure if I could get the same pistons with the .095 pin or not but I guess if they do hone the bushing, this ensures it to be perfectly round. I just want to make everything right and reliable and not second guessing anything. I then of course looked at the K1 rods, stock stroke and all, just a .097 small end size. might go that route also.

I would ask why they supplied a .97 pin as opposed to the factory .943

You can hone it to fit, dependent on the thickness of the bushing in the small end.

Myself, I prefer the earlier .927 pin for the weight savings.

I'm sure you balanced the assembly, but the extra weight of the pin is on the wrong end.

I know, people are going to say that the additional weight is nothing, but in the scheme of things, it all adds up. if the weight of the pin was insignificant then all the various pins designed to cut weight would all be for nothing.

the machine shop had the crank and block, the only thing they did was bore the block .010 over/hone and prep it. they checked the crank out and installed a double roller timing chain gear and polished the crank up a little bit. I got the pistons and was just gonna start putting it back together.

I have to agree with GlenB, why did they get you pistons with over sized pins?

not sure why haha, im gonna contact them tomorrow and either see if they can get the same piston kit made with the stock size pin, or if I have to buy new rods, OR if they feel honing the small end will be ok I guess.

how about put the wrist pins in the freezer the colder the better! then boil a big pot of water/oil, put the retainer in one side of the piston put the piston in the hot water/oil leave it for a few mins have another set of hands with gloves take pin/piston out quickly insert pin in one motion don't stop! wa-la put retainer in, don't turn them down!

if I did that, they wouldn't be "free floating". they need to be free and able to be put together smoothly, not using heat or freeze method unless they were a press fit.

talked to auto tec today, they said the pin that was supplied (.945) can either be pressed in, or have the bronze bushing machined out and made into a floating pin. of course the floating pin is factory but what do yous think? have the shop press them in? or get them machined and stick with floating?

Free floater.

I would still return the pistons.

Since you're open to new rods, get them with the .927, gen 2/3 size, and pistons to match

What's wrong with those rods, they're stock length and states they fit the LS block?

I would use a 6.125 rod length if you replace the rods.

Pistons aren't my first choice or second, but they do state they are for 6.098 rod, mock it up and see, we aren't talking much.

The footnotes say D,L but I couldn't find the definitions.

the L means it comes with .045 wrist pin, but idk what the D stands for... I got this under another site that sold these pistons but it didn't list the D foot note.
