Default Odd Brake Malfunction - Discovered during front replacements

This is not related to the other recent brake failure thread where the owner experienced an unexplained lockup which GM cannot sort out (good luck on that one, OP).

This is my tale:

At just over 80K miles I started to get the front brake wear indicator squealing. I knew that my brakes were close to needing replacement, as I inspect and measure them every 6 months during tire/wheel clean and inspects.

I did the rear brakes about two months ago.

Anyway, on the passenger side, the caliper slide bolts rubber seals had become disconnected from the captured bolt groove, allowing the slide bolts to be exposed to the elements, corroding them. The top one was corroded to the point of being frozen, which resulted in difficulty removing the pin from the boss.

After removing both and cleaning and lubricating them, I did reinstall them to allow returning the car to service (it is my daily driver) pending ordering and installing new slide bolts soon.

In decades of doing brakes, I have never seen this before. Just a marker/heads up for any guys in the future doing their brakes.

Coincidentally, while under there I replaced a cracked front inner fender liner that I had ordered and was sitting on for a few months. When I pulled it out, I saw that my radiator support lower bracket welds are broken where is bolts to the frame on the driver's side. Guess that's my next repair.:toe tap:

Stay safe out there.

I had the same thing happen on my right rear. One of the grease boots was off and the pin was frozen so bad it broke off when I was trying to turn it. I had to replace the entire bracket.

Well then, it's not just me. Sorry for your troubles.

Given that another person, you, popped right up that quickly with the same problem, it leads to a presumed conclusion that this is a not so uncommon problem.

Well, at least this thread is out there now, so others encountering this problem can refer to this.

I'm guessing that the broken pin, and the subsequent bracket replacement was quite inconvenient, and a tad spendy. At least I was able to break mine loose, albeit with a penetrant soaking and lots of working it loose with a 17mm socket. The corrosion is bad enough on both that I will be replacing mine prematurely.

Also, I will add inspecting these boots and pins to my semi-annual brake inspections.

Thanks for chiming in.

I think it was $75 for a new bracket at the dealer and around $6 for the pins and lube from pep boys. There was about an inch of bolt threads sticking out of the hole in the bracket. I fought with it for several hours trying to get it out but lost the battle. Also the inner pad on that side was worn down almost to the rivets because of that caliper being stuck in place. All because of a little rubber boot being out of place.
