do you think a harmonic balancer can go bad at 40k miles on a 2005. Its a friends car and the dealership sd it was bad. I find it real odd. so im turning to you guys to shed some light on this. the car is never driven hard at all.
Absolutely. They go bad a lot sooner than that too. That has been a defective design since the C5 and can affect any year C6. I had it replaced on my 05 at 47k miles.
yes. i noticed mine going wobbly at 30,000 miles on a 2011. it may have happened earlier, but took notice when i heard that "chirp". getting it replaced this week with after-market pulley!
my 05 had 109k on it when I replaced mine and only started to chirp a few months right before I tore my motor down and did a over haul. replaced it with an ATI assembly. love it! id say replace it to be safe, maybe plan a cam install while your already so close though but thats your call.
Sorry to thread jack, but what are the signs of it going bad. I assume I can watch the pulley to see if it wobbles, but is there a noise to look for? My 05 car is 133k.

Squeeking/chirping belt is a pretty sure sign its bad.

The OEM balancer is a piece of junk, I replaced mine by one from a reputable 3-letter brand name.

I found an 05 garage queen in October got to drive it a whole 28 days and then cover it up and now a whole winter reading all things Vette and about things like this....133k....could you come over and like touch my hood and put some kind of blessing on it....WOW!

The ballancer/shaft is not keyed, but instead pressure retained to the crank via one time use stretch bolt instead. So for starters, the bolt can come loose from spinning against the shaft and the ballancer just walks out forward.
Next is the fact that there is a thin band of rubber between the inner section, and the other pully section. So normally you can see if the rubber center section is coming apart with the outer pully section starting to wobble, but some times the outer pully section just starts to walk out away from the inner section without wobbling instead.
If and when it time to replace the Ballancer (deep into labor cost since the steering rack has to be pulled to replace it), go with an ATI, and have it pinned to the shaft. The factory ballancer is a 50K unit as most on a good day, and with it not pinned or keyed to the crank shaft, relays on the stretch bolt to hold it in place to much as well.
didn't pin my ATI. ATI said they see no need in having it pinned unless your running a supercharger or more than factory pulleys. they said with a factory belt set up, there was no need. some may recommend it but I chose not to. that's just my opinion and I know some will say I should have.
