Default Valve Spring Height.

All Concerned,

What to set my valve spring height at?

Valve springs, PRC .675 EHT DBL Spring Kit.
Install Height: 1.810???
Coil Bind: 1.060

Cam Lift, Intake: .612, Exhaust: .598.

Intake: 1.060 (coil bind) + .050 (buffer) + .612 (lift) = 1.722 install height. Yes???

Exhaust: 1.060 (coil bind) + .050 (buffer) + .598 (lift) = 1.708 install height. Yes???

Please advise.

Respectfully,
David

All the LS springs I've seen want an installed height of 1.800" and typically get there without much it any shimming. What are you trying to accomplish? More seat pressure?

Default Getting it Right.

Do not want any more spring pressure then what is needed/required.

I just want to make sure I get the valve spring "height" install correct.

Have read numerous articles that tell you to take the coil bind of the spring + .050 for a buffer and add the cam lift to get the correct install height.

I am confused...I was lead to believe that the spring manufacture recommendation install height is the max you were allowed to install that spring at.

The correct install height would be the coil bind + .050 + cam lift was the goal you needed to try and achieve.

If that measurement exceeded the spring manufacture's recommended install height you had to purchase longer springs.

Is my understanding jacked/going in the wrong direction!

Please advise.

David

The installed height is the recommended height, not the max height. I've read that same .050" buffer but you don't need to get the height down to where there is only .050" left. If there's more it won't hurt anything. The spring is made to have a certain seat pressure at the recommended installed height. Installing it at a smaller installed height will just increase seat (and open) pressure.

As I said, especially if you're installing new springs on a stock LS head then there is typically no shimming needed, they all end up at ~1.800", but it's good to use a spring height tool to verify.
