A4 trans code P0974. UPDATE
Just as the member said who responded to my first post, it was a shorted 1-2 shift solenoid. since the part was only $16 he replaced the 3-4 shift solenoid too. total cost including parts, filter, fluid, and labor...........$362. This was a local shop, and btw, owner has a beautiful c5, torch red, that he bought new back in the day.
FYI, this occurred after a 700 mile trip from SC to OH. Symptoms were clunky shifts, seemed to start in 2nd gear, high trans temps all of a sudden (216), definitely limp mode characteristics. Good to have her back home!
