Default GS Oil Temp

I have a 2013 GS with 21,000mi. Today it was about 99 degrees in Dallas. Coming around the tollway averaging 76mph and the faster I went the temp went up. At 80mph I averaged 248 degrees.
Is this too high? As I got off the highway and it cooled to 233 and cruised on through town no issues.

Thx ahead!

Too hot. I came home in 96F this week and I was about 209, and I was on side streets, not 80MPH. Do you hear the fan on when you are stopped?

I'd check the usual things, fan, fluid levels, thermostat, and be sure to run 50/50 in that heat.

The fan was running the entire time and when I stopped and let run back down to 230 on oil and incidently 200 Coolant Temp.

Thx.

Must be an Auto (W/O Z51)?; my GS with M6 runs closer to water temp or a little under because of the Dry Sump and external oil cooler.

230 is warm but not anywhere near red line. If the C6 is the same as the C5, it will not throw a code until it hits 305 degrees. If it will make you feel better, you can always add an external oil cooler and drop the temps by 30 or so degrees.

Next time you are close to a GS manual or Z car, check out the cooler just inside the front grill; it runs almost side to side and about 6 or 8 inches tall.

Yes it is an Auto, I guess all GS's are Z51?

Anyway, Thx, I will check it out. I had wondered about an additional oil cooler before I saw this temp. Maybe stop watching the temp.

Well, kinda; all Z51's have extra oil coolers (PS, Oil and trans). All the GS M6's are closer to a Z06 setup as far as coolers go (also has diff cooler).

I wouldn't worry about your temps, they are inline with other A6 trans. I took a trip out west last year with a buddy (GS A6) and my GS M6. After several hours of 70+ driving we compared all our temps. I was presently surprised on how much lower all my fluids were running; even though I was turning 200 more revs. As I recall, his engine oil was running right at 230 when we checked; mine was in the high 190's......(extra oil volume and external cooler).

Not too bad, most people don't worry if it's under 285 but check your radiator / evaporator to see if it needs to be cleaned for dirt and debris.

Yeah, disregard my babble, I thought you meant coolant temps.

Ok, Thx! Learning all the time. I will clean all I can get to and blow off a few areas, gently. What a great car! BTW, the reservoir was full to level on
coolant.

Thx to all!

I pulled my radiator doing a cam install on my GS this Winter and could not believe the amount of "crap" that built up between the two.

I keep my instrument panel set to oil temp, and don't sweat the water temp. The oil rarely hits 210 where it should be. I've bought oil cooler covers but have yet to install them. Perhaps this Fall.

There's gonna be huge difference between the wet sump and the dry sump oil temps. 5.5 quarts vs 9.5 quarts is the main reason. All GS automatics and convertibles were wet sump, so my '13 GS vert with the M6 should be a pretty close mirror to your car, and I routinely see oil temps in the 225-235 range when running on the X-way at +/- 70 MPH, and yes, it cools down when the speed gets slower. Summer temps here in OH aren't as hot as TX, but the air running thru the cooler is coming right off the hot pavement, so intake air temps of 140-160 degrees would not be unexpected. Just as in racing, anything north of 265-270 deg for oil temps on a regular basis and it's time to get worried and start changing your oil more regularly.

Great post! Thx. Max today 244 @ avg 80mph, 97 ambient temp.

So can I or should I add an intercooler?

Can you; YES, I'm going to guess for about $300 all in.

Should you; well, for the sake of the engine/engine oil...NO, it (230/250 degrees) isn't hurting anything. For piece of mind, perhaps....if it will let you sleep better.

You can always send out a sample of your oil at your next oil change to have it's properties annualized. They will most likely give you an estimate on how much life is still left in your oil or if you have gone past it. Then you can make an informed decision on adding a cooler or changing your oil sooner if needed.

Yeah I think step one for anyone seeing higher than normal oil temps is to loosen the EOC and A/C condenser and clean all the crap (leaves, sticks, dirt, etc.) out from there. Remember, it doesn't matter how huge a cooler you have if there is no air flowing through/past it!

On a side note - I remember reading some people modifying their windshield washer tanks to spray on their EOC, and report pretty great success. Seems to me this would be a good solution for anyone who sees too low oil temps on normal days, and too high oil temps on track days...

Thx! On it. And now I am modding for more thermo cooling all over the engine compartment.
