Mind you, I am very pleased the way the standard AT handles the 600HPFW but I am heading to the 850ish level and basically I am looking for an improved packaged transmission system that would handle the new HP and TQ.

8l90 reads as an opportunity to me but I'd like a take from transmission experts as to whether this upgrade is remotely possible.

Besides the obvious dimensioning and coupling issues I suppose there are also electronic compatibility issues to tackle and I realize everything has a cost.

So is this a reasonable course of action at a reasonable budget?

Thanks!

The electronics will be the tough part. And now with the 10 speed coming out, the 8 speed will be the bastard child. I bet all the support goes towards the 10 speed since that is what will be used for the next 5-6 years compared to tranny that was used for 1-2 years.

USShift.com reports that they may be working on a tcm for this transmission for 2018.
They have the controllers for the Ford 6 speed out now, and say they are considering the GM transmission in the near future. If/When the new 10 speed comes out that is used by Ford and GM, maybe we can see something for that as well.

I see this is a pretty old thread, but correct me if im wrong, the 8l90 has proved itself to be not that reliable right? where as the 6l80 is still a solid performer especially when built. Seems like a major waste of money when theirs other options with way less headaches (built 4l80 or 6l80)... Aside from the extra gears (which really isnt that much of a benefit, if anything could be a hindrance) I cant really see the point.
