Default Overheating need help

Well I've been having hell with my 05 corvette. About two weeks ago water got in through my intake and shorted out my tb sensors. It goes into reduced engine power which I can clear via hp tuners. The car is running and runs strong but when not moving the temps jump up like 250 (was stuck in traffic). As soon as the car starts rolling the temps go back to normal. We did pull the heads to get the water from the engine we did not have any other way to crank the engine to get the water out. Could I have a leak somewhere in the head gasket. I have not seen any signs of water in the oil but car hasn't been driven much. Any input would be great

thanks junior

Not sure if its your issue but have you checked under your radiator shroud? I recently installed a vararam intake on mine and a good portion of the ac condenser was covered with crap blocking airflow to the radiator. I found animal fur small twigs grass and two dead birds in there. Or is it possible that you have air in your coolant? I haven't heard of it being a common issue with corvettes but i know it happens a lot with other cars.

It sounds like your fan isn't running at correct speed or perhaps not coming on at all. The fan is what keeps the temp down in traffic/at idle.

If it cools off when you start moving, then it sounds like the fan is not coming on. The fan is not really necessary at speed but is very necessary at idle. I'm thinking that if it is an internal engine problem, then the overheating would be all the time.

I think you can just remove the spark plugs in order to crank the engine and get the water out.

Yes the fan was my first thought but it comes on and the temp still goes up. And yes the cai is aftermarket. I guess my next move would be to remove any air from the system.
Thanks on the input guys.

Maybe a compression check to test for head gasket? Sorry to hear about the water intake.

Yeah a compression test is also on the list. Don't get of work till Tuesday so just trying to gather as much info as possible. Will never buy another cai in the future though.

What intake did you have and what were the conditions that lead to the water getting in?

Vararam. Pulled up to the stop sign moved about five and it just died on. Couldn't have been going faster than 5 mph. The street that I was on was fine but the one I was crossing was just high enough to get me. I don't blame the intake and I don't ever drive in the rain this storm just got me by surprise.

Thanks on the input guys.
The fan reaches high speed (90% duty cycle) at temperatures above 113°C (235°F).
If the fan is running at a slower speed (hard to tell by just looking at it spin) it will not cool the engine when driving the car at slower speeds/in traffic.

At higher coolant temps you should also momentarily hear the fan running (loudly) when you shut the engine off.

I set them to 90% around 185* to see if it would help but no results. Yes the fans do stay on really high after the engine is turned off.

Not trying to side track the thread but are you saying you went into a deep puddle then it sucked water in? Just worried because i also have a vararam.

There have been numerous threads/posts about this topic. Not saying it always happens, but it has happened to select few. The potential is always there. You may want to search on here for threads using CAI name as keyword.

Okay I solved my overheating problems it ended up being air in the coolant just like mar10 had said. Thanks to all for your input.

Glad to hear it. Way easier fix than a head gasket.
