Default Timing chain damper?

My lsx short block was put together without a timing chain damper and it has a JP billet double roller gear set should I worry about that or install one? The oil pump is also installed so I guess that would have to be removed and realigned which I have not done.

if I had the engine apart, I would consider it cheap insurance installing a damper / guide.

I would too, it's cheap. Just make sure you get the damper and not the tensioner style. My tensioner broke within 9,000 mi. It didn't hurt anything, but the chain was loose and the spring fell into the pan.

I'm not concerned about the tensioner just really did not want to have to deal with R/R'ing the oil pump I never aligned one before!

you don't have to remove the chain / pump to swap the damper / guide

That would be nice but i didn't think there was enough room to get the bolts in behind the pump and a few said they tried and it was a no go. My shortblock is still wrapped and i'm not quite ready to open it up to find that out plus i did not pick up the dampener yet!

I don't know if you can get it in with the pump on. But, it is just four bolts to slide the pump off. It just slides off. There is no special alignment. Just pull it, put on the damper, and then bolt the pump back on.

I know what's involved to remove the pump but it does need to be aligned when reinstalled or the gears will rub on the pump housing from not being centered. Some may just reinstall and call it a day but I'm not going to chance that on a new 10k Shortblock I will be doing the shim way.

Double roller doesn't need a damper. Just make sure you're timing cover is clearanced incase the double roller hits... ask me how I know.

I had the builder run a CNC program on the cover but that is only for the pump clearance didn't think the chain had contact issues.
