Need some help. Recently, when I first start my 05 automatic with 36k , after being parked, in the garage, all night I have the following problem:I get in and see the "Ignition" switch lites up I put my foot on the brake just before I press the start button and hear a buzzing sound coming from the console I press the start button and nothing press start button several more times and car starts. The rest of the day car starts fine. Any help would be appreciated!!
turned out to be a "faulty column lock". The column lock actuator switch is going bad.
LeDez, the Automatic trans cars don't have column locks.
OP, sounds like the shift interlock solenoid is dying, the buzzing sound you hear in the console. Probably just gets sticky while sitting all night. The usual solution is a new shifter w/solenoid, they aren't serviced separately.
I agree...that buzzing is likely the solenoid going, going, soon to be gone. But I thought that the '05 cars had the column lock and then it was done away with in '06.

Is this the solenoid that prevents you from shifting, out of park, without the brake pedal being depressed? If so can it be strapped out, to avoid having to change the shifter?? Is there any other option to changing the shifter?? Thanks
My '08 Base Coupe A6 got stuck too and would only allow Drive and Nuetral. Drove it home in Drive (I almost always use S), parked it to deal with in the morning. Next morning battery is dead and shifter still stuck. Charged battery for about 24hours and removed shift boot, left side only, starting from forward center out from the foam and console top and fiddled around with the switches. I finally stuck a longish screwdriver in and started pushing around on stuff...blindly felt something on the left front side of the shifter move and release the button and allowing the shifter to move through all gears etc. No idea what I pushed on but after a fresh charge on the battery car is as good as it was... cheezy GM shifter will now be treated gingerly hoping not to get it stuck again...BTW I had parked facing forward on an incline which I think also loaded things up, I'll start using my ebrake so the trans isn't holding the car when parked on hills...
anyone know what I pushed on? I figure I got lucky not having to visit the stealership or remove center console etc.
