Default Key Fob issue

I have an 05 6 speed that is having intermittent key fob issues. I recently reprogrammed both key fobs, using the long programming procedure, new batteries in both fobs and a 3 month old battery in car. I have had an issue where it doesn't detect either fob, doors won't unlock, trunk won't open. How do I diagnose what the problem is? The only changes to stock is the radio. I bought a radio at Crutchfield a couple months ago: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113DDX4...?cc=02&tp=5684

I installed the radio using the crutchfield adapters, and had no problems for a couple weeks, then the car stopped recognizing the key fobs. Could it be something with the radio, or is it something else? Once I get into the car, through the trunk, I have to put the fob in the glovebox to start the car.

First thing I would do is replace the fob batteries again.

Do you have anything plugged into the charge port near the ashtray? I've had an issue where a cheap USB charge adapter caused interference such that the fobs would not be consistently detected.

Start by unplugging any aftermarket electronics you may have plugged in. If the problem magically goes away. you've found your culprit.

The fob starts the car, so the re-learn procedure worked.

It's possible that something is jamming the radio conversation between the car and the key fob. I had a malfunctioning garage door opener receiver that did exactly that. The key fobs wouldn't work unless I switched off the circuit breaker to the door opener.

Perhaps your new radio is causing the interference, or perhaps there's another source. Try disconnecting the power to the new radio. If that doesn't work, see if the problem goes away when you're parked out in the middle of nowhere.

Also for the purposes of this experiment leave your cell phone in the house.

If your fob battery is dead or the car doesn't detect your fob, and you try and pop the door handle you should see the red door lock light flash. This will at least tell you the car battery is dead.

Then replace your fob battery, if that doesn't work the car isn't seeing the fob, try putting it in the programming slot and see if the car will start then, that's the closest you can get the fob to the transmitter. I doubt anything would block the signal that close. if it starts then I'd start looking at your new head unit.

Also I've had my fob not recognize when I was driving down the road, it turns out the key fob from my wifes parents mitsubishi was screwing with the signal. Both fobs were in the same pocket.

Okay, just to clarify, it is definitely not the car battery, I have had it parked for the last couple weeks with a batter tender. When the fob is not detected, the doors wont unlock, and the car will only start when the fob is in the glove box slot. I hate the idea of pulling the head unit, since the problem is intermittent, and it was 2-3 weeks after installing the stereo that I started having problems. I guess I will start with replacing the batteries in the fob again, is there a brand of battery that works better than others?

I think it was Rayovac that has problems working. Try Duracell.

Thanks! I will try it. I had bought generic batteries, probably worth switching to name brand just to rule that issue out.

I have 05, and every once in while my key fob won't pop open the truck or let me open the door. As soon has I hit unlock on the fob I can gain entry and everything works fine. It's been doing that for two years.
