Default What cheap fix for cut battery cable?

Bought a salvage car (not a C6) and the positive cable was cut. What is a simple way to reattach the cable ends? Can't use those butt connectors because the cable is too large, probably 4 gauge or so. Is there a splice connector I can stick both ends into and then set screws on both sides will clamp down to secure it?

Yes there are connectors like that. Not sure what store would carry them. Might have to order from an industrial supplier like McMaster or MSC.

Go to an electrical supply house. Take one end of the cable you're trying to splice together. They'll fix you up.

I can't remember what they are called. Might check the electrical department at Home Depot.

:iagree
Home depot wont have what you need they make brass connectors you can put both ends of the bare wire in and then a clamp with a screw in it will tighten down over both wires, get yourself some rubber splice tape and stretch over connection point equal to the wire insulation and follow with 3M scotch 33 electrical tape, when you see the splice connector it will make sense. if you have trouble finding the right splice leave a message in my inbox i could send you one.

Picked up these at HD for $5 a pair. At least I can now connect the battery and see how many miles it has and if it runs.

I'm sure that will work. The electrical supply houses have connectors that are actually insulated.

I would not use those. Check any electrical supply shop and get the grease filled end caps for splicing electric motor leads. They are simply made for the exact purpose your asking for in an automotive scenario. It will be a plastic housing filled with grease and two set screws to put the wires in and tighten down, once the grease dries it hardens and is water proof. Wrap the connection tightly with electrical tape and your good forever.

That thingy worked great and the perfect size for the cable. Car started fine and ran a few seconds. The airbox hose is crushed up against the radiator so it can't breathe.

On a side note, don't let anyone tell you that you have to take the car to a dealer to program replacement keys, even if you don't have any keys to begin with, on a late model GM. Car didn't come with any keys. Got a new laser cut switchblade remote key at the dealer parts department for $55. Guy told me how to program it and it took only a half hour. Service department wanted $100 plus I would have to tow it there.
