Default Intermittently will not start

NEED HELP PLEASE: Intermittently, it will not start, press the start button you hear a loud ping like the starter trying to engage the fly wheel,no cranking at all, then it goes dead like a dead battery. No Electric City Mon!
In order to get it started I find success in disconnecting the negative battery terminal and reconnecting.

Battery and alternator tested fine.
I switched the relays around to see if that would help, still having the same problem.
There was a good deal of corrosion on the negative terminal, cleaned it off still having the problem.

Anyone have experience with this problem?

I would start by load testing the battery. If the battery tests ok then do a voltage drop test down the the starter. Sometimes the solenoids stick and fail due to the heat from the exhaust.

I would jack it up and check all the wiring to the starter. check for burnt and/or loose wiring at the solenoid. also make sure all wiring to the starter is away from any metal engine parts. if all checks out you may want to remove the starter and bench test it.

Follow posts 2&3. Don't assume the starter is good if you bench test it and it works unless you do it about 50 times. If the connection are clean, the battery is good and your getting 12v. To the s terminal, the starter is bad.

Those are the symptoms of wiring problem at the starter.

if its a 2005 vet you have a problem with your steering lock. When you disconnect your battery you reset the steering lock which lets you start the car. I had the same problem with my 05 i bought a steering colum lock bypass and fixed the problem.

Finally had a chance to get under the car today. I inspected everything carefully and could not find any evidence of loose connections at the starter. My headers are ceramic coated, no wires were even close to the headers where it could possibly cause damage. No evidence of burnt wires.
I drove to the airport on Monday, no problems. Got back today, started up no problems. It is a really strange issue.

You are most likely experiencing two things. One is voltage drop in the wiring when the wires are hot. secondly the starter is hot requiring more amperage to do its job properly. This is caused by continuous heat cycles and is always accelerated with headers. You can upgrade the wire size but most likely will need a new starter at this point. The main wire from the battery is usually the only one that needs an upgrade.

Get a new starter and protect it with a heat shield of some sort

I finally found the problem a few weeks ago. It was remarkably simple... The negative battery cable had corrosion all around it. I cleaned it a second time with a wire brush on a drill and reconnected the cable. I have not had the problem since. Keeping my fingers crossed. thought I cleaned it good the first time, just not good enough.

Battery died, will not hold a charge. Bet this was the root cause.
