Interesting, wonder if your son upgraded to an 06 or newer diff when RPM built it.

He said that was the rear that was there when he bought the car. I don't really know how to identify what's been done back there. I'm gonna call rpm and see if any of the markings on the case can help me to identify what stage it is. I would hate to replace it with one that's rated for lower power than this one

I hope you're not rebuilding the 05 case, the housings notoriously crack in half and the pinion shoots out the back. If your case is cracked (and if the ring gear stripped it likely is) be sure and check your transmission output shaft, they normally bend when this happens which requires a transmission rebuild.

Be sure and upgrade to a 06+ case (which requires a new transmission end plate) or a C5 rear which requires a cradle adapter that stanger383 can make you.

Rick Kim knows all of this so hopefully he's set you straight on it. He did these upgrades with a buddy local to him in MD with an 05 like mine.

It's been upgraded to the newer style. Rick explained to me over the phone how to tell. I pulled it today. From what I can see through the opening, this diff is brand new. The ring gear looks like it has no miles on it. The fluid, except for all the metal, looks fresh out the bottle. I don't really know corvettes, but it looks to me like less than 100 on this diff.

I haven't made any decisions yet. I was gonna wait until Rick tells me what's going on in there. What do you mean by just enough? The rear was chewed up when I got it so I don't really know what it pulls like.

I was worried about 4.11s with my M6. They are perfect. Highway cruising is a non issue.

I don't know why it's upside down. This app sucks.

I have had 3:42, 3;90 and 4:10. I would always choose 4:10, more of what you are looking for. Makes the car feel 500 lbs lighter as you are giving it a longer lever to work with.

She's probably gonna see some racing with about a 50 or 60mph rolling start. How would a taller gear affect that?

My car is killer on a roll up to 138 which is my redline on 4th gear. I can beat cars with a lot more HP. You will learn to set the race so you can pull in third for a bit then hit fourth. That longer lever of 4:10's gives you an advantage over 3:42 cars up until you shift to fifth at 140 which you shouldn't be doing on the highway anyway.

Check out post 11 in this thread for a good explanation why.

As you can see, a large number of people like 4:10 gears. I picked 3:73 as a compromise all around ratio.

Just my opinion, and I am not going to debate why it is better than the 4:10 gears or not because it is what I wanted and I only need to satisfy one person, me!

Here's a crappy quality video with lots of spinning and slow shifting lol.

4.10s, and a cam. LS3.

I forgot to update. I had never shipped anything like that before and I was scared it would get damaged during shipping so i built a box. It's really a cradle with the diff bolted to it and a cover.

When Rick received it he found that the gears were fine but the carrier assembly had blown all to crap.

Rick rebuilt it in a day and shipped it back to me. Took me about 2.5 hours to get it back together and I've been cheesing every since. I kept the 3.73's since the gears were good. New carrier and seals and everything else.
