Line of sight, and even up around the mirror is a good location.
Hence the reason for the shift ligtht, is so you don't have to look down at the dash gauges to know when to shift (so mounting it down around there is pretty redundant to start with, since the you could just look at the tach instead).

I agree that the height is a bit redundant, but the advantage (in my opinion) of having the light is that you can watch the track instead of the tach and react to the flash in your peripheral vision.

Agreed if you are staring at the dash, instead of the track as you are driving down instead; since you could just put a LED in the OEM dash gauge shift light location that does not have a LED now, then use the PCM 5v on the unused pin out to active the led when it comes time to shift.
Even better yet, both EFI live, and Hp Tuner, allows you to set when the LED will light up (PCM sends out the 5V on the unused PCM pin (HP tuner, engine>fuel>cut off-DFCO>misc> lamp RPM).
Well you just made my $100 shift light a $.50 one thanks . I wasn't aware that was an option in HPT since the car didn't have an indicator light to begin with.

I haven't dug into this yet but I was hoping to do this soon. What unused PCM pin do you tap into to add an external shift light? I'd like to edit the RPM set point in HP Tuners and wire in my own LED light placed in the AC vent. I'll look into it more but maybe you can save me some time finding the specific pin/wire. I have a 09 Z06 with HUD if that makes any difference in configurations.
