Default tpms questions

If you transfer the tpms sensors from one set of wheels to another do they need to be reprogrammed? Also I have an 05 and as far as I know the sensors are original but seem to still work ok. Should I buy a new set for the new wheels or use the ones I have until they go out? Thx for your help. Donwil

As long as you put them back on the car in the same position they were in with the old wheels, front and rear, left and right, you don't have to reprogram them. Weather you buy new one's or not is up to you but they are past their usual life span.

I would buy new one based on the fact that they are 10 years old.

Thx for the replies fellas. I kind of was thinking the same about replacing the old ones. I have to get new front tires also. Bought the rears last year right before I put it away for winter. Can discount tire program them as long as I know the procedure to follow? I didn't want to purchase the tool needed just to use it once. Donwil

Discount Tire replaced and programmed mine without needing any help getting it into program mode. They know what they're doing.

I agree that you should replace them and I would also take it to DT if you have a location convenient to you. That's also where I'm going the next time I have to deal with a tire issue with my 15 Z06/Z07.

Thx EV and Thomas.I have used discount tire before. Good to know they can take care of corvettes. Unlike my dealer who put on my new rear tires and ran the battery dead . Didn't put it in reverse when they parked it. Dealers are great.

The sensors go into a sleep mode when the car is not driven, so the lifespan is partially dependent on the mileage on the car. I have two sets of wheels/sensors for my car. They are 2006 and 2007 wheels. Both sets of sensors work fine and since it is easy to replace one, I would not do anything until there is a sensor that has a problem. Lithium batteries have a shelf life of 10 years, so the batteries do not go bad on their own, they must be drained from use. Use your car's miles to help make the decision.

Didn't know that about the sensors. My 05 has 13400 on it now,had 9400 when I bought it. I am putting some 08 polished gumby wheels on so using the sensors I have should be ok. Thx for your help. Much appreciated. Donwil

If they are still working order I wouldn't change them.

cclive is correct. When GM states the sensors have a 10 year life, that's based on the average national annual mileage of somewhere around 13-14K miles. My OEM sensors have 115K miles and have not yet even blinked.
