Just installed it yesterday and was playing with the gears and am finding it very hard to feel the difference from 5th and reverse... took it for a ride and tested and seemed/luckily went into 5th everytime. Should I be worried to shift into reverse instead of 5th gear??? Or is it even possible?
bdanyluk is correct...you should be shifting with the palm of your hand (when moving the shift lever forward) and your fingertips (when moving the shift lever back) the shifter self-centers at the 3-4 gate....too many folks grab the lever in a death grip, thinking they have to force it into gear, and wonder why their shifter bushings wear out...this isn't the sixties any more with shift mechanisms bolted to the side of a cast iron box...
ETA: Also, your right hand belongs on the steering wheel, not constantly grabbing the shifter...you only should move your hand to the shift lever to select another gear, then immediately return it to the steering wheel...

I think I need this mod. I have an 05 and I'm a terrible shifter. If I'm trying to hit third, I often miss under heavy acceleration. I hate it! Will the short throw make it easier to shift because my 05 really is a tough one to master. I smell some clutch every now and then, it's not my DD, but I want to improve my shifting, but the factory set up is so bad in my opinion.
I believe you have to modify (cut a circle etc) the acoustic boot. I have heard that this can cause more noise from the torque tube as the acoustic boot now is not as sound deadening.....did you incur a louder noise of the torque tube etc. after the install??

Yes on the boot cut, since it becomes part of the return spring for the shifter return to the 3/4 gear line.
No on the extra noise, since the cut boot fits tightly around the shifter lower ring section so seal out the noise.
I've only had an issue with going from 6th down to 3rd, I somehow put it into 5th every time with mgw. Better to go 6 to 4 to 3 instead. Probably easier on the transmission also. Early on I kept going into 3rd instead of 1st from a stop, but I figured it out. Enjoy it!

Crap, is it that bad? Was it a mistake to swap the factory shifter?

Yea I asked the question because my boot was damaged, not from installing a shifter, but from I believe the heat of the cats underneath 2012 got an unlucky extra set of unmonitored cats,I have since removed. I believe the extra heat caused it to become brittle and crack...either that or I was given a faulty boot from GM when the car was built. Anyhow, the noise made me feel like I had a torque tube problem until I found out it was the boot. I bought a new one and the noise is gone...but I read some people who bought the short shifter complained of more noise but they probably cut the boot wrong.
