I recently purchased a 07' C6 with navigation. I quickly found that the navigation unit is way out of date. I have searched for the update discs but the last available disc is from 2013, which is still too old for some cities. I'm contemplating a new app system, like the Panasonic in the link below, that uses Apple CarPlay. Does anyone have experience with installing a CarPlay system? Do you like it? Does it integrate well with HUD?
No after market deck will integrate with the HUD system currently.
There was a company trying to come with with a module that would allow integrating with the hud with after market radio's, but since they have not come out with it yet, get a feeling that GM stepped in and Nix'd it instead.
I put a Pioneer 8000NEX in my '09. like Dano said, you lose integration with HUD, but everything else will still work. One thing to note is that (to use a technical term), Apple Maps sux.
Fortunately, the 8000NEX has its own built in Nav which is pretty decent. I would not recommend buying a CarPlay system that relies totally on Apple Maps for its navigation. That said, the other apps, make it a worthwhile upgrade.
Great feedback. I didn't think about relying on Apple Maps, which are terrible. My hope was to use Google Maps, like I do in my iPhone, but that may not be possible. The 8000nex has integrated maps from Here. Do you like your system? Any problems with it?

Yeah. To my knowledge Maps is the only nav app currently available under CarPlay.
As for the 8000NEX's nav. its pretty decent. Certainly better than than the OEM Nav.
Apple just announced at WWDC that CarPlay would start working wirelessly, (probably with the next major iOS release). Its not known whether this will require a firmware update from Pioneer. That said, Pioneer seems to be pretty good about keeping up (after they finally released CarPlay support. (whole nuther story))

Yeah, I've been debating on waiting for an update or new CarPlay 2.0 supported system from Pioneer to become available. Either way, I'll have to get a system with integrated maps. I'll be lost, literally, using Apple Maps.

I have an 8000NEX, and I find that I never use CarPlay. I use bluetooth exclusively, unless my phone is dying or I need to use my phone for AppRadio mode to stream DashCommand to the screen.
With iOS9 coming this fall, we'll supposedly get FULL CarPlay usage over bluetooth, but obviously Pioneer will have to provide a firmware update to allow us to use that.
Also, having a system with a REAL GPS receiver is, IMO, infinitely better than relying on your phone for navigation. There are just too many contingencies where your phone isn't going to have service or dies or whatever.
I am looking forward to a better Siri experience while in the car. She's improved significantly over the past few versions, and she's way better than GM's voice system in the new stingrays, but still not quite where I want. Again, can't wait for iOS9..
