even though this thread is 1+ years old, it contains a lot of useful information complete with pictures.
thank you
i am in the process of doing my heads, exhaust/headers, cam and intake which are in direct correlation with this thread. also, 'while i'm in there', i'm also doing pads, rotors and coil-overs. then i am going to heat wrap oil, clutch & brake lines and some electrical wires that have become brittle due to the heat.
when i removed the air deflectors and the oil cooler i noticed that there is a gap going up to the cooler/condenser and radiator. would it be beneficial or harmful if i left this space open and maybe fabricate a wire mesh to keep out the big stuff?
thank you

So is it really necessary to remove the oil pump? I have done a cam swap an soon will be doing another. If I dont actually remove the chain an just pull the cam sprocket an cam do you have to pull the oil pump? I know it is harder to see the timing marks but I could still see them when I did my swap.

If you do pull the oil pump, sand the back of the oil pump housing very lightly to removed the sharp edge, so that when you slide the oil pump back in the casting edge doesn’t cut the seals in the pan.

But to answer your question, it's not really necessary. I was replacing the chain while in there so I needed to.

I went ahead an just pulled the pump an installed a new C5R chain. I dont know about sanding lightly lol. I put a fairly decent chamfer on the edge of the pump and on the inside edge that would catch on the gasket. I see no reason this would hurt anything an it slid in so much easier than the first time i changed the cam.
