Default Another HB Thread....

Finally got my Diablo Intune tuner today but my car started making this weird noise (so I'm not using it til this is fixed), almost sounds like metal to metal contact. I popped the hood and sure enough, the damn HB is wobbling. I turned on the AC and it's noticeably worse.... My car is a 2007 A6. Here's the video for your viewing pleasure:

I refuse to go to the dealership, so now I'm currently getting quotes from different shops. I don't see the point in spending twice as much on an ATI HB cuz my car is my DD. I'm thinking about going with either SLP or Powerbond. What do yall think?

To make you decision easier. SLP is a rebadged PowerBond, which is actually manufactured by DAYCO.

I'm going with a PowerBond unit myself as my ATI just let itself go.

sounds more like the noise is coming from the AC compressor. if that belt looks all cracked anyway, cut it off (since it's 2nd) and start it up to see if the noise goes away at least

Ditto, HB may have a little wobble, but the scrapping noise is coming from a dry bearing on the way out instead.

Myself, I would pull both belts, and start spinning pulleys by hand to figure out which bearing was going south.

Also, since I was that deep anyways, would be pulling all the idler and tension pulley bearing to clean and re-grease them as well. Hence figure is one of them has gone dry, then the others are short to follow as well.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated! I saw the HB wobbling, started looking at all the threads about them and thought that is what could be wrong (though I don't have a chirping noise)....

Is it a PITA? I can do simple things, ie. change oil, brake pads, even installed a CAI on the C5 that I used to have....

the belts are easy enough. the hub on the others hand requires a few special tools like hub remover, and installer. Also, you need to remove the rack, or at least partially to gain access to that bolt. Also need a angle torque wrench as you'll need to torque the new bolt, then turn it additional amount of degrees.

Main belt is easy to pull from the top by taking the tension off it via the tensioner on the passenger side.

The AC belt tensioner is on the the bottom of the motor, and has to be attack from the bottom of the car instead.

C5, but will give you the idea

Just want to thank yall again for your help. I took rpmextra's advice and just cut the damn belt off from the AC pulley system and the noise went away. I'll checking to see which pulley is bad later tonight and this weekend will be replacing both pulleys along with a new belt. I can't tell yall how much $$$ these boards have saved me; thanks again for your help, much appreciated!

Awesome! I'm glad that I posted the video to the boards.... I was ready to have the HB replaced, I thought it looked like it was wobbling and with all the problems a bunch of people have had with HBs, I was thinking that was what was wrong with my car. Yalls replies have saved me $1K, lol!

I just messed with the pulleys and the tensioner spins rather freely, so I'll be replacing that on Saturday.

A pulley that spins freely but isn't grinding or wobbley or noisy may not be the culprit. It probably does need to be lubed though.

Don't forget to spin the water pump pulley. When the bearing started going in my C5's waterpump, it was making a horrific grinding noise.

Whichever component is making the noise, you should be able to feel it as a roughness and probably hear it also as you spin it by hand.

Hmmm... I'll have to slowly turn it to see if I feel roughness. I know it's something in the AC belt system or whatever its called, cuz once I removed that belt, the noise stopped....

good stuff, As i said on the first post, I said that the noise sounded like it was from the ac side. I never thought the hub looked out of whack. Looks reasonable to me.

Sorry, I should have paid closer attention!

If the noise went away when you cut the A/C belt, that narrows it down because there are only three things it could be: the A/C Compressor, the A/C tensioner or the Harmonic Balancer.

Most likely it is the A/C tensioner.
