I'm looking at C6's, and was wondering what's the deal with the shift-to-reverse prior to engine shutdown on the 2005's? What's its purpose? I believe this was a one year only feature on the 05's. Is this something that's mechanical, or is it something in the programming that can be "tuned" out of the computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated
2005 is the only year that did this.If you don't go into reverse the service manual says the battery will drain down and may be damaged.
But this is no biggie, you can't forget because if you attempt to leave the car the door will still be locked and there will be a message on DIC to "shift to reverse".

So, you actually have to leave the car in reverse once you leave the car parked? Do you know, by chance, what is the purpose of this? Was it something that GM simply removed from the computers' programming for the remainder of the C6 run?
Some systems stayed on if it was not parked in reverse and killed the battery. There is a computer flash that corrects that but you will still have to park in reverse. Seems to me not that big of a deal to just put it in reverse when you park. Its gotta be in some gear, why not reverse?

The purpose was to ensure the car wasn't left parked in neutral. There is already a sensor on the transmission for reverse.. so it made sense to just use reverse instead of adding a sensor for, say, 1st, and forcing people to put it in 1st.
I guess it was a well intended idea.. just executed poorly. Allowing the battery to totally run dead because of someone not putting it in reverse was pretty idiotic
People hated it.. tons of dead batteries later it was deleted on the future model years
The doors don't want to open until you put it in reverse.. so it's not very easy to forget.
Not a big deal in the least to just put it in reverse

I agree with what you and the previous gentleman said. I appreciate the explanations One of the things that I was thinking though, if you park pointing downhill, then it's fine. However, if you have to park pointing uphill, it would be preferable to put it into 1st. Yes, I know, you should use the parking brake always, which I do anyway, with all my cars, stick and auto
