Default Help with 05 Diff Upgrade Please!!

So I have read a bunch of the old threads about swapping out an 05 diff to an 06... So I sourced the 06+ tail housing, bolt and seal to mate up to a built 07 diff I bought. After removing my 05 tail housing, I realized I have to swap over parts from the old to the new. No big deal right? Wrong. The bearing race for one of the gears is too big to go into the machined whole on the newer one...

Notice the bearing race to the bottom left hole... it fits easy in this boss.

New boss is smaller than the older one..

I never heard of anyone having to get different parts for the housing... Anyone help here?

Sub'd.. glad you're figuring this one out instead of me . I'll try to look around though.

If you don't get any good answers I'll email the shop that I was going to set me up with a new tail housing, diff case and set everything up for me

I'll ask the stupid question--which bearing is the problem?

It's the countershaft bearing. It has a couple shims and an oil funnel that go in before the race. The bearing itself is pressed onto the countershaft in the transmission. It is the bottom bearing in the pic below.

Interesting. I looked up the part numbers for everything I could find in that area and all the numbers were the same, literally everything except the housing.. I dunno then

Interesting.. Perhaps I just got a case that wasn't machined correctly.

I dunno.. is the new style tail housing brand new or used?

How far off is it anyways? Are we talking thousandths of an inch or less, or something more than that?

You sure it doesn't just need the hell smacked out of it?

I am waiting for my 06 diff from RPM as they are setting up 373 gears for me to go in my 05. I have a new 06 trans. extension housing sitting in my garage for the swap. I can get the part # off it and do some measurements for you if you like. I hope I don't have the same problem.

I'd be very interested in that info.. I'll probably swap over to the new style housing sooner or later and plan on sourcing a lot of the parts on my own

You have the wrong tail housing the tail housing you have is for a Z06 t56 or a tr6060 which uses a 1 piece cluster your 05 has a 2 piece cluster and takes a different tail housing. We have them available if you would like to give us a call.

I ordered the part from http://www.wholesalegmpartsonline.com/ and it was supposed to be for an 06-07 MM6.. My tranny is a T56 from an 05. I just sent out the part to a machine shop to open up the boss.

You will need to remove the transmission disassemble and check extension cluster endplay as the shims will be way off now and may cause issues with 5th and 6th gear.

Oh yeah, I see the 0075 one shows up for 7.0L engine, the 2778 shows up for 6.0L

Good to know

I was hoping 19206298 would work. It's way cheaper

Yeah, I didn't see that on the fine print... They don't make it easy for you to cross reference parts these days.. I have called local dealers and they will do is look up your VIN and give you what matches your VIN.. Heaven forbid you want to fix something that they should have fixed from the beginning..

Yeah they don't make it easy

19206298 is a lot cheaper but I assume it's only for newer years, for whatever reason.. maybe RPM can tell us what the differences are??

I do not know the GM part numbers for each housing we have generic part numbers in our system for the parts. The differences are 1 piece and 2 piece clusters take different bearings.

Best I can tell 19206298 is listed for LS9 engines, but I'm not sure if that's all it fits or not
