So I recently installed some American racing headers on my 2011 z06 and in order to install them I had to remove the oil lines so I figured this would be a good time to do an oil change. The manual say it takes 10.5 quarts of oil and also states in order to check the oil level you must start the car get it up to running temperature turn it off wait 5 minute and then check dip stick in dry sump. Well I added exactly 10.5 quarts of oil and did exactly what the manual said to check the oil level and it's still low ? I don't want to over fill it so now I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if the motor will actually take more oil because I removed the oil lines and also the oil cooler in order to install my headers. Any help would be much appreciated I don't want to over fill the engine but I definitely don't want to leave it low either. Thanks
Sometimes 5 minutes is not enough time, try at 10 minutes and 15. The oil temp also get up to at least 190 before you should check the oil. my GS IT ALWAYS TAKES 10.5.
Where exactly is the oil registering on the dip stick for you to say it's low?
I try to keep mine anywhere between the second and third dot so to speak. Too much oil can be just as bad as too little.
I havent had time to go out and check again this time making sure to bring it to the right oil temp but the last time I did it it wasn't even to the first dot. Honestly I don't think I have been warming it up enough. I'm gonna check it again this evening so I'll let you guys know and thank you guys for the feed back.

So I came home last night and checked the oil level one more time, this time I started the engine and let the oil temp get to 178 degrees. Let it sit for five minutes and still the oil level is below the first circle just barely below the hatched section. I have 11 quarts of oil in the motor would you guys recommend adding more ?

That's strange, 10.5 usually gets me near the top. Maybe add a bit more to get it into the hatched section.
If you already have 11 hold on don't add anymore until someone chimes in. That is very strange. I would wait and figure out what the heck is happening and why this is. You Are not in danger with 11, if the oil was too low you would get a low oil warning. It sounds like it needs 2 more quarts to come up to proper level and there is no way dry sump will take 13 quarts. If disconnecting the cooler lines would cause that that would be mentioned. Ill also check the shop manual for you to see if it ever mentions this on the re and re of cooler lines or the cooler.
Just checked my shop manual on all engine oil related sections. There is not one warning or note that the dry sump will need more oil than 10.5 if it is drained completely or if cooler lines or the cooler is replaced. I would try to trouble shoot what is happening. Did you do the oil change yourself? You are sure there is no mistake with the math? Liters vs quarts, something like this i would even drain it and measure it as it will be clean oil. I just caution you against putting 13 quarts into a system that is supposed to take 10.5. Maybe some others can chime in too.

Definitely 11 quarts I just looked again at the redline bottles in my garage. Pretty strange, I'm definitely not going to add more but I'm also scared it doesn't have enough in it. I guess as long as there isn't a low oil warning light I'm probably ok. Thanks for the help I'll try and not drive it too much until I trouble shot it a little more.
Dry sump engines do not have a low oil warning sensor. The sensor and wiring is only installed in wet sump oil pans.
You know you are right. I always assumed that all would have that but after checking the shop manuals i also see it on wet sump only and for a good reason. Regardless the OP should be ok with 11 quarts. Thanks for the correction.
