Hello Friends,
I am seeing some sandy looking particles inside my exhaust tips on my 08. I have NPP w/wild to mild, but I leave them open most of the time. Could these grains be from the cat convertor?
Could be scaling from the inside of the exhaust, ceramic substrate of a cat, but unless you had a major issue with the car running recently bad, I doubt it. The car would have to have seen some serious miss firing to cause the cat to break up.
Sulfur deposits is another possibility, usually comes out a light color similar to sand.
At times you can see cars that blow out sulfur deposits in the form of a light brown cloud from accumulation on the inside of the pipes. You can see this happen when a driver gets into the throttle hard.
Sometimes the inter-ram materiel can loosen and cause the brick to rattle and vibrate around inside the enclosure. This could be a possibility.
They can also break apart and turn side ways, causing some performance degradation.

Thanks for the info. The car runs great but I think I have heard a slight rattle before. I need to take it in for the emissions recall - maybe it needs a new cat. High regards, Montman
My car only ran the stock cats for less than 6K from new all stock. When I removed the cats to mod the car I noticed a small percentage of the substrate already clogged. So it would not be out of the possibility of a bad cat.
You can drop the cat and inspect it before spending any money.
