My starter on my 2013 Z06 decided to die last week. I am considering tackling the replacement myself on jack stands with a buddy. The car is just out of the 3 yr warranty... I took at look under the car today and I have some questions:
1. I do not have headers. Do I have to remove the passenger side cat-converter pipe? I see 4 studs with nuts connecting the cat pipe to the exhaust manifold. 3 of the nuts look fairly easy to get to, but the one on the right side front looks near impossible to get a wrench on.
2. Do I have to remove the 2 dry sump oil lines running under the cat pipe?
I know some of you have done this before, please give me some tips/advice. Thanks!
On my 09 the starter wouldn't come out with the manifold/exhaust in the way. The manual recommends separating the converter from the manifold, but I found it easier to loosen the exhaust manifold from the cylinder head which allowed me to move it out of the way without having to remove it.
Just a trick in case you deside to loosen or remove the cats to get to those nuts is best done with a long 18 or 24 inch socket extention from the top using a short socked some times a swivel socket a ladder and flash light helps.
Be sure to diconect negative on the battery before you start, I live the windows open all the way down so I can get in and out of the car without key fab action just by pulling the door floor release level. Hope this helps and as always be sure car is firmly supported on jack stands before you get under it.
Taking the manifold loose from the head was definitely the right way to go. It was very easy to loosen it and it gave me enough wiggle room to get the starter out.
For me the two on the outside of the cat/manifold were the tough ones, till I made this. Its two 15mm sockets welded together flip flopped and turned a bit out of sync. From the top with a long extension and one or two turns and it was loose. I did leave one in that was easy to get at from underneath.
I pulled my starter to drain the block before I removed the heads.

Are you positive its your starter in a 13, I ask because I have a 13Z that's often slow to crank when hot...off topic I know...good luck with your repairs

Yes, in my case, it was the starter that was the issue. Have you had your battery checked? That is the first thing to check on these cars when you encounter any type of starting issue.
