Default c6 z06 Ls9 potential build

Hey everyone,

I have a c6 z06 in which I use for drag racing, I blew the engine at the end of last season and since then it has been sitting in my garage... I have come across an opportunity where my good friend has sold his ZR1. when purchasing the car he bought a spare ls9 crate motor which he now wants to get rid of... I will be able to purchase the engine at a price less than a new ls7 crate...

Basically, I was wondering if anyone has done an ls9 swap into a z06 before? I have been doing some research and I noticed that the cam sensor plug is different on the zr1 (smaller I believe, but still a 58 tooth) and that the supercharger has a couple of map sensors instead of a single on a standard ls engine... Sourcing a new hood for fitment and upgrading to the zr1 fuel pump system would also be necessary...

is it possible to swap the cam sensor to an ls7 one and can I make the supercharger work with only one map? I don't really want to have to cut up my wiring harness if possible...

Is there anything else I should know that may effect installation of this engine? Eg, will I be ok with the standard ls9 front accessory drive? will the zr1 heat exchanger and intercooler lines all fit up?

thanks in advance!

I thought the ZR1 engine sat slightly further towards the rear of the car to allow room for the wider belt, but I could be mistaken. I'd look into that though.

If I were in your position I'd probably flip the ls9 if you're getting it for under market value and buy a long block setup exactly how you'd like it.

Thanks for that! seems you are correct ... ls9 in a ZR1 apparently sits 1' lower and 1' back compared to the z06 ...

If that is the case could I just use the engine mounts off of a zr1? I believe they have a different part number to the z06 ones

Careful that you don't need a torque tube with that. if it's 1" back that has to be corrected somewhere else. Not too mention you wouldn't have the same gear ratios in the trans 2.66 vs 2.27 so the feel would be much different than the stock zr1. Might not be a bad feel. loose top end to gain acceleration. I'd imagine a few harness mods or swap would be needed. The zr1 fuel pumps are different too as well as injectors. seems like a ton of trouble imho

Thanks for this info, torque tube is 1' shorter on my 06 Z06 than on the later 09-13 model zr1 and z06... seems as though there will be a need for a new cradle as well as the torque tube... gear ratios may actually help! Guessing the gearboxes in the zr1 and z06 have the same dimensions and can swap between?
