I recently got the BTR stage 4 cam and ive been talking to Advance inductions about doing my head work and they recommend to bump the compression up to 12:1 now with decking the heads that much would that require me getting shorter pushrods?
Shorter pushrods might not be the case but for sure check the length. The reason I state this is because your new cam will have a smaller base circle than your OEM cam and would require longer pushrods if you were not changing the heads. Regarding your head milling I would consider using a thinner head gaskets verse milling your heads. I'm saying to not mill your heads but to minimize the milling to preserve the quinch.
how would you go about doing that? subtract how much the heads are milled from the factory push rod length?
Once you install you new heads and cam. You will need to find top dead center on the cylinder and make sure it's on the compression stroke. Once you found TDC turn your crank 1/4 pass TDC this will ensure your on the base circle of the cam. Then set zero lash, meaning no play between the rocker and pushrod. Once that is determined add your lifter preload then you will have your pushrod length.
hmm interesting I might have to talk with my tuner and more with advance inductions
I was thinking of using factory gm head gaskets when I do this is there a proper way to measure them?

This topic has been discussed at length for many years on this site and others. Someone above gave you the instructions.
If you're installing the heads, you'll need a pushrod length checker. They are about $20 from summit. If you aren't installing it, then your builder will do the measuring for you and let you know. Odds are, you'll need a shorter pushrod.
yes he said I would need to measure I understood that, but I asked how would you properly measure them I didn't know there was a tool ...
Brandon619 told you how to do it in the post before your last. He left out a couple of parts, but I provided you with a complete step-by-step guide in a link.
