Well, I just paid ahp to fix up a set of ls7 heads for me and at the moment, I've elected not to port them. My reasoning is that i don't feel like spending $1k for the minor hp increase. I have intake, headers and exhaust and car is tuned already by the previous owner for this setup. I don't mind spending 500 bucks to get the heads ported, but not if it means I have to spend another 500 getting it tuned again because of it. Do any of the more experienced members know if tune is necessary for ported heads?

Maybe. If you really want to avoid it, then skip it. A datalog of the car after putting the heads on will tell you if a tweak to the tune is needed. If the heads flow significantly more, or change compression then yes a tune may be very beneficial.

Datalog? Is that a program? I know the idea of data logging (say telemetry at the track for example) but I'm not familiar with what you're referring to.

It plugs into your OBDII port and reports what is going on with varies parts of the engine.
