I recently took my newly completed '12 GS A6 car to the strip for the first time. The car is heavily modded (736 RWHP) and has a "built" A6 and a stock Z06 (3.42) rear. On run #3 the car suffered a driveline failure at launch.
See the attached pics to witness the carnage. The rear plate on the trans has parts sheared off as well as the front of the differential case. The trans output shaft is loose and wobbling.
I would appreciate ideas from the Forum gurus on what could cause a new transmission to fail like this on run #3. It was certainly not traction as the 345/30/19 Nitto NT05 DR's spun like crazy.
Wow... haven't seen that before on a 6L80. A brace might have helped for that but they are hard to come by.
No wheel hop ? , maybe on burnout ? If not possibly an internal trans failure. Tough to say really until its opened up. Who built it ? Were the drums welded, and was a billet shaft installed ? Too many questions.

No wheel hop that I noticed on the burnout or the two prior runs. I prefer not to identify the transmission vendor until they have had a chance to look at it and tell me what happened and how much it takes to fix it. I will ask the trans builder about options for a brace. I am going to replace the Z06 rear with a 2.93 Level 4 diff from RPM. At least this forces me to undo the bad decision I made to let the car builder (now out of business) talk me into the 3.42 Z06 rear. With the car apart I have decided to upgrade the driveshaft and axle shafts with parts from DSS.

Those Z06's diffs are pretty strong, but at this point you need one anyways. Keep us posted on what you find out as the cause. I am more interested in what was done to the trans, than who did it.
