Default Cant shift to PARK! Help!

At a stop sign today at a slight incline and had to put it in park so I could close the rear hatch all the way. When I got back in it was really hard to shift out of park because of the incline and pressure on the gears. I think that I strong armed it to much, when I got home and tried to back into my garage, it wouldn't go into any gear except drive and neutral. So I've scoured the forums and see problems going out of park but not getting into it. I have it (gear shifter assembly area) apart mostly now to see if there is anything blatantly broke but don't really see anything. I am really heartbroken at the moment because I've had it for barely 10 days and have broke it already. Can you guy look at the pic and see if you see anything in there awry? Thanks!

Most likely the plastic grommet that is used to attach the shift cable to the shifter has broken. You will need to remove the shifter to fix it. It also could be broken at the transmission end. The same grommet is used there (I think). You can get the part at any auto parts store. Search the forum for the part number. It's been posted here several 6.

I was thinking the same, but if that were the case wouldn't it be unable to shift into any gear, presently I can go from drive to neutral, and thats it.

The locking pawl could be causing it to hang up I guess.

That was it, the locking pawl! I went ahead and did the mod as described here for it and shes working fine now. Thanks for mentioning that EVRose, that got me going in the right direction. For anyone else that ever has this problem, dont put your car in park while on an incline. put it in neutral, apply parking brake...then put it in park. Ramming mine out of park while on a hill is what I believe made it malfunction, have no idea why it did, but it happened right after, sooo... Now on to this pesky service active handling warning.
