Denso Navigation
I got a great deal on a Denso Navigation unit with all 7 bose speakers out of a 2012 vette, I know what you bose haters will say, but I just want to know what is the purpose of the navigation DVD ?
Is it just to update the maps? Do I need one to get my dealer to pair the unit to my vehicle? Lastly I see there are so many variations of these DVD's what am I looking for when I go to buy one?

It's a DVD based Nav system. It doesn't have a hard drive or memory so the Nav DVD has to be loaded in the unit all the time because that is where it reads the map info from in real time. It has nothing to do with updating the unit nor is it needed for the dealer.
The DVD map info is updated periodically with a new DVD. You probably want the latest version, I don't know what year they are up to now. I suggest you ask in the C6 General Forum, they talk about these things over there.

As others have said, the DVD contains the maps so you need in the unit it all the time. As for marrying the nav to the car, yes, you need a Tech II (not necessarily a dealer but somebody with a real Tech II) ... it takes 5 minutes. Many dealers or mechanics will do it for free as a good-will gesture. There have been other reports of dealers charging $100 for the service ...

The latest NAV DVD version is 10.0 2016. It updated any new roads or highways that were finished in 2014. It also added a ton new Points of Interest in the data base (Hotels, Restaurants, etc.)
Attached are all the versions from 2005-2016
