Default Steering wheel position sensor/bearing

My 2011 GS automatic convert was showing a Service Active Handling message. I took it into my local dealer and they diagnosed it as the steering wheel position sensor. They replaced the sensor and put the column back together. They now state that the bearing will not stay seated in the plastic sleeve if the column is retracted/telescoped inward (the car has electric tilt and tele). I read a bunch of posts about this issue. It doesn't appear that this should be an issue as long as the bearing is properly seated. Any suggestions on how the bearing should be properly seated? Will the bearing no longer stay seated once it has been removed?

The dealer claims a new column is the only solution, since the plastics sleeve, bearing and other parts are no longer available individually. This is quickly becoming a very expensive repair.

I would appreciate any help/advice.

BTW, I found this post on Steering Sensor to be really helpful.

Thanks,

I leave this to another co-member to better answer.

Dealer stating column is needed.....I don't think so.

(Did the dealer break part of the column that is a non-serviceable item or did they install the sensor unit incorrectly.)

OP may need to inspect and take pictures as DIY.
Or be at the mercy of an independent shop to verify.
I would certainly delay returning the Vette to this original repairing dealer.

In for answers.
Good luck.

Thanks for the response.

I agree it seems like I shouldn't need to replace the entire column. However, if there is damage to the sleeve/bearing, then I have no other choice, since the individual parts aren't available.

I would like to know how to properly seat the bearing to ensure it stays in place. Based on the other posts, as long it is properly seated it shouldn't back out. Is this correct?

Is the plastic retaining ring supposed to hold the entire assembly (bearing and steering wheel position sensor) in place. The tabs on this ring don't appear to be broken, but when the column is retracted the ring becomes unclipped (pops off).

BTW, the car is still at the dealer. I created a ticket with GM on this issue and am waiting a response.

Thanks,
