I asked this question in another thread but that thread was originally started because of another question. So, I am asking the guys that may have some experience on this topic. What is the best oil pan gasket for an LS3? Felpro makes a "dry seal" gasket. I can get a GM gasket, but i,ve een told to seal everything with RTV. Any here ever use the Felpro oil pan gasket?
Felpro is a very high quality gasket. some if us "old school" guys come from a day when we put "high tack" on everything. these NEW silicone gaskets really don't need that, I would use the Felpro WITHOUT any worries.
Felpro is a high quality gasket for sure. I must of assembled about 2000 plus engines using this brand. Victory, which I used aslo was another good gasket company, but I think they are called something else these days.
If your doing the job, I would use sparingly RTV silicone gasket maker where ever there are jointed areas, like the rear seal housing and front timing cover parting lines for insurance.

Good advice - there are a couple of "weak" corners on the oil pan design as well and GM recommends RTV in these corners, one of which is in the same corner as the oil filter. There are higher oil pressures here. Those long rear pan bolts have less torque and this corner is known for leaks. But too much RTV is not good as it can dislodge and find its way in some very bad places.

The Felpro gasket has been ordered. I am familiar with rtv and areas on most engines that has a seem that can allow a leak but can anyone tell me where the areas on the LS3 that need a little rtv. I plan to put blue lok-tite on the bolt threads.

Read the SM to find locations for sealant and torque specs along with tightening sequence. If you don't get that part right, it won't make any difference on the gasket brand. Procedure specs are your best friend.
OEM gasket on my second block with 70K+ miles on each without a drop ever.

If you're changing the factory pan gasket, just follow what the factory did. There will be evidence on the old gasket where they applied RTV in the build process. The obvious area is the driver's side back corner where the oil filter is and the lines for the oil cooler if equipped. I remember that area clearly because pan leaks originate there most often, but there were two or three other areas as well. That back corner is a poor design. There is oil pressure there and the bolt pattern in that corner is inadequate.
Also, take heed the pan bolt torques. The long rear bolts have a lower torque. They are M6 bolts (the short pan bolts are M8s). These long bolts can snap pretty easily if you over torque. I would personally (and did) keep loctite OFF the threads, but there is an impact on torque if you use loctite, especially the rear long bolts.
Good day, I'd like to insert a question here. Can replacing a leaking oil pan gasket be done at home with the right tools, or is this something for a dealer only? Local dealer is quoting $1060 to change the gasket due to a leak. Does other parts have to be taken off to do this?

Asking Because my brother has a c6
it can IF your mechanically inclined and have the tools, why don't you just try to GENTLY tighten the bolts. and see if you see where it leaking from. a couple drips here and there? don't worry about it!
