Default Starter removal?

Car is a 2006 manual 6 speed. The solenoid terminal broke off on my friend's car. No start. Do we have to remove the starter, or can we just put a new solenoid in? Tips on how to?

Solenoid sits on top of the starter. Disconnect batt cable! Starter and solenoid drops out with 2 bolts. I can't remember if I could get my hand up there to remove wires while it is bolted in. I have an A6 car.

Thanks! I've read that some have had to lift the engine or remove the passenger side cat. Does anyone know if just the solenoid can be changed? I ask becasue his starter is 6 months old.

just disconnect the 2 bolts and the starter drops easily. I don't believe the solenoid can be changed on a c6 but I'm not 100% sure.

yep .. what everybody else says ...

nope you don't have to raise the engine to drop starter

yep just remove two bolts and drop the starter then disconnect the wires ...

yep you can replace just the solenoid

yep ....this is the correct solenoid....

I bought an Auto Zone starter as I did not want to wait for the solenoid ..... I then cleaned up my old starter , mounted the new
solenoid put it in the starter box because ... its not if ... the new solenoid is going to go bad ... its just WHEN ....

Excellent, thanks! So no need to drop any exhaust? Just want to make sure I bring enough tools to help him.

no exhaust removal needed, the solenoid do get bad because of excessive heat from the manifold, best advice, get a piece of heat shield from Ace Hardware and a big hose clamp, wrap the starter with it and clamp the protector around the starter.

Yup, I was thinking of doing something to somewhat protect it from heat. Hopefully we'll start before it gets too hot.

Buy the solenoid on ebay for $12.95 shipped, it's the same solenoid.

We ended up buying a new starter(well warranty) and put it in. Still no start or cranking. But his lightd were stupid dim. Too bad I didn't bring my multi meter. But he went and dropped the battery for s charge. Hopefully that is it. Everything is connected properly.
