2005 automatic: This is NOT the noise you get while turning...this noise is steady and gets faster as the car travels faster. Sitting still, no noise. Only while moving. As the car travels slower, the noise gets slower. Almost a grinding noise. Sounds like it is coming from the center. I cannot isolate the noise to either side.
If you swerve the car side to side while driving does it change sound? also does it sound the same while accelerating or decelerating. maybe try gearing the trans down and let the engine do some braking. See if that also changes the sound.
also try throwing it in neutral see if the sound changes. But I don't think so because the sound would change with the changing engine rpm and not wheel speed.
I appreciate all the suggestions...
1. When I put car in neutral, no change
2. I tried shifting into lower gear, no change
3. No change in the sound when it goes side to side
4. In reference to the above suggestions, the only change in the noise is when the car begins to slow down.
IF it was turning noise I would change the fluid. But since it is when driving straight. I would find a local rear end guy. See if he can rebuild. Or find a used low mileage one.
I had my rearend make noise. I was lucky I was still under warranty. Got a new diff problem went away. My noise was under deceleration only.
If its only under deceleration could it be the loosened pinion bearing maybe?
That is probably the case. But once it makes noise the damage is done. You can tighten it back up. but the noise might not get much better at that point. I would look for a rear end shop at this point.
