i got in my car today and didn't go a mile before a message on the dic said essentially ac was shut off because the engine is hot. i turned around and went back home. opened the hood and checked the coolant which was full. the radiator is only a few months old. the temp gauge did not register any temp at all. could it be a thermostat issue? perhaps a sending unit has gone belly up confusing the computer? it has been 100+ degrees for several days here but the car was only driven about 12 miles all day. the car is an 08 z51 coupe with 71k miles. any Ideas? don't hve a code reader. before i spend $150 just to get codes read by the dealer, thought I would ask here first.
Any part store reads codes for free, so if you were going to pay a dealer $150 to do that, wow. Autozone, carquest, napa, etc etc all do it for free. Or buy a $20 reader off amazon and keep it in the glove box.
bit the bullet and took it to the dealer. the engine wasn't over heating at all which is what i thought. the temp control sensor shorted out and it freaked out the bcm. as a result, the bcm assumed the engine was overheating and went into survival mode. the problem was both valve cover gaskets were weeping oil. the driver side gasket leaked hot oil on the wire harness that the temp control sensor is wired to. the oil melted the insulation off two of the wires and when they touched it resulted in a short to the sensor. $146 dollars in parts and $775 in labor. 2.8hrs times two techs at $135 per hour. OUCH! wonder what other surprises this ten year old car has in store.
I'd like to have seen pictures of that oil leak! I have same year, less miles but zero oil leaks! That would take one hell of a bad valve cover gasket leak to short out the wires I would think? Glad it's fixed but I'd have some questions....think you'd have known about that leak..

it was more of a weep than a big leak. the harness is in the front on the drivers side and sits right under one corner of the valve cover. oil didnt short out the wires pre se. over time, the heated oil melted the insulation off a portion of two wires enough to expose a small section of bare wire on two adjacent wires that then touched each other to cause the short. the wires fed the coolant temp sensor mounted under the harness to the block. would have taken a very detailed engine inspection to find it as the oil was inside the harness.
