I have a 2006 A6 with about 22k miles. Periodically I am getting a very hard downshift from 2nd to 1st when I come to a stop. It downshifts into 1st but does it with a "thunk" sound. It doesn't do it very often, just once in awhile. I am thinking about changing the trans fluid/filter and see if that fixes it. I realize that it can't hurt to change them but is it worth it? I also wonder if resetting (relearn) the TCM would do any good? Any other thoughts?

Good luck. I've got over 90K miles on my 2006 with an A6. I had a similar thing happen to me when my voltage got low due to a failing battery.
I replaced the battery and it never happened again. A new battery change likely reset any gliches in the electronics.
You can try disconnecting the battery, which will reset any electronic gliches, and see if that helps. ( A shot in the dark)
I wouldn't think with 22k miles you would need a fluid change. What are your driving habits, are you always babying it? Reason I ask is that the computer will learn your driving habits and make line pressure adjustments. It did something like that to mine so I went and beat on it a little more...problem went away.
I don't drive it very aggressively. Mainly cruising around town. Does anyone know if disconnecting the battery will clear the TCM and force it to relearn my driving habits? I will get on it a little harder and see if that makes a difference.
Disconnecting the battery will not clear the "adapts" you can only clear them with a GM TECH ll or similiar device , after the reset the trans will shift funny sometimes as it relearns but after about 20 miles of varied driving you will be fine .
Google A6 relearn or reset trans adapts for the driving segment you must do for the trans to relearn properly

I've driven the car for several years and it only started to do it earlier this year. Do you have any idea why it doesn't occur all of the time; only once in awhile? Are there certain conditions under which it occurs?
