Default What the heck is this?

Being slightly **** about things I decided to replace the stock harmonic balancer as it had a slight wobble. Removed the balancer and seal to find this extra seal on the hub of the oem balancer. Do I need it and why haven't I heard of this part in all the discussions of balancer replacements? The part on the left is the one in question. Thanks

that is the DEW washer that helps in preventing HB from spinning on crank snout due to lack of key way on crank snout and HB.(Diamond Empregnated Washer).you need it and haven't heard of it because you haven't been paying attention.most cheap after market hb's won't be finish machined to fit the DEW and would be a good idea to pin crank when using one.if GM thought you didn't need it they wouldn't have gone to the trouble of machining it to accept the DEW

My PowerBond balancer is machined for it, however when looking at video's on harmonic balancers for Ls3 engines I could not find anywhere the "DEW" ( probably wasn't paying attention) Did you mean to say it would be a good idea to pin crank when NOT using one? I will be pinning the crank regardless of using the "DEW".

Thanks

yes good idea to pin crank when not using Dew.even if the crank is pinned you can use the Dew.they are reusable if not damaged. On my own car I would use a new one.check any of the factory service manuals for info about Dew
