Top End Noise
24,000 miles
Noisy Valvetrain
My Grand Sport with 24k very easy miles is developing a tapping sound in the valvetrain on both sides. It seems to be (using stethoscope) concentrated around number 8 cylinder. This tapping sound can be heard most clearly at a steady 2500 rpm under load. My concern: it started to be noticeable at 22k miles; until then the engine was quiet. I would not consider it loud, but it is noticeable. The technician who does all the servicing on it suggests that I keep a close eye on it to see if it gets louder, noting that Chevy V8s tend to have this type of noise.
Thx,
GP

Not plugs. Not injectors. and not exhaust. Definitely internal, at the top end and can be heard distinctly through a stethoscope on both sides at the valve covers. Number eight cylinder area the loudest. The noise(s) are distinctly heard at their loudest at 2500 rpm under load.
Do you mostly drive in the city with a lot of stop and go traffic and frequent short trips and long periods of the car idling?
If so,
Here's how i reduce most of that noise in my LS2 engine..... Fuel injector cleaner or fuel additive , frequent oil changes and running here hard more often with some longer drives to break up combustion deposits that may add to the pings and clanking sound in engine. My vette seem to run a little rich. so these steps have not totally eliminated valve train noise but it has quiet it down considerably. sometimes barely noticeable.
hope this helps
