Default 07 Auto Trans Shift Cable

My 07 will not shift into any gear nor will the engine turn over. I believe either my shift cable broke or has detached itself from the shift lever or the transmission. I fave been told I need to remove the console in order to remove or replace the grommet on the shift lever. Seems to me that it should be easier to service the cable from beneath the car, but the car is new to me. I know the transmission end of the cable is accessed from under the car. For those of you who have had this problem, what is your suggested means of addressing this issue? One more question. Is the switch that prevents the car from starting except when in park or neutral located on the transmission? As always, I appreciate any assistance or advice.l

Transmission not in park /neutral = no start. Shifter cable has two ends under shifter and at rear on transmission. Xpipe and tunnel cover has to be removed to get to shifter end from under car. Most remove console to get to shifter end. Trans end has Xpipe in the way, almost needs to be removed.

I did overlook your question about switch, but here is the answer.

If you just want to replace the grommet at the shifter, remove the center console cover. If you are replacing the entire cable (it is a $50.00 part), do it from under the car.
The switch you are asking about is under the center console cover next to the shifter.

Thanks for the info. I will go thru the console and hope that the cable came off of the shift lever and not the tranny end

Thanks for the info. I am new to the C6 and have always had a C1 or C2.

Have not tried using pliers yet. Will try on Friday. Currently on yhr diesel gereratorvon my motor home. If you have any luck, let me know. Even though my vette has only 23,000 miles, I gate to have to pull the exhaust if the cable is broke or ot has come off the tranny end

Had the same issue last week. Shift cable broke. Stuck in drive. Called tow truck. He lifted the rear with his dolly and got under there with a bar and put the tranny in park. I started car and while holding the brakes hard he put it in drive. He lowered the car and I drove to the dealer. Saved the tow charge. Got it fixed under service plan I bought. $56.99 for the part, $460 labor. Common problem but not an easy fix I guess.

Put the rear end on jack stands today and saw that the tranny end of the cable is still attached. Finally removed the shift **** than had to stop to run an errand. Will finish removing the console tomorrow and hope the shift end of the cable came off. If not, will probably have the car towed to a dealer as I am not anxious to pull the exhaust in my garage. The underneath of my car is exceptionally clean (only 23M miles) but the exhaust may not want to come apart very easy Thanks to all who replied to my question. As always saved me much time and frustration.

The fix is not an easy one. I just had mine done by a mechanic. 50.00 for the cable and 4 hrs labor. Drive out 401.00. The exhaust has to be dropped and there must be a hundred bolts in the transmission tunnel. It is one of those PIA repairs. Good luck

Very unlikely that any of your cables broke. It is the plastic bushing at each end of the cable that snaps after about ten years. A mechanic is just going to replace the entire cable. You can just replace that bushing at each end without removing the cable. You can get at both ends of the cable fairly easily and the plastic bushings are available at most auto parts stores for about $5.00. Many here have just replaced the bushings. If cost is a concern, this is your best option..
