I recently bought a 2012 Gransport with the manual 6 speed. I have yet to see the 1-4 light come on, and have never been "forced" to perform a 1 to 4 shift. Could the car already have a skip shift eliminator in it? Where would I look? Aren't there several methods to achieve this?
If you have the in line skip shift eliminator, you will find it on the left side of your transmission. The wiring harness is unplugged from the trans and the device will be plugged into it. There is another piece that plugs into the trans to keep out the elements from the electrical connections.
True, didn't consider that it might have a custom tune since the gentleman who previously owned the car was 68 years old and the car was bone stock (no mods evident) but I concede anything is possible.

The skip shift comes on in limited circumstances so it may be why you're not experiencing it (read the Owner's Manual). If the skip-shift was disabled in some way, the alert light will still flash on the instrument panel.....look for it on the lower left side.
If one of the various fuse or wiring mods was made the light will still come on but it won't block your shift. If the tune was changed you will never get the light and it will never block your shift.
There are very specific conditions that have to be met before the light comes on. I don't have the list in front of me but they include coolant temp, RPM, throttle opening and probably something else. So if you are checking with a cold engine, it won't happen. If you are using more throttle or reving more it won't happen.
It only ever happened to me driving very slowly in traffic but it's still annoying because the shift into 4th bogs the motor. The fuse mod is the easiest and cheapest and works just fine.

Mine was done in the tune and I never get the light...

I have installed the resistor assembly to the wiring harnesses of all four Z cars that I have owned. Dash light still comes on because the computer still thinks it is connected to the skip shift solenoid at the tranny.
