Another shifter story
My local hot rod/vette shop quoted me $740 to just replace the entire shifter. He said he doesn't replace the cable, just the shifter. I decided to take it to the local dealership and have them take a look. They said the shifter was wore out and needed to be replaced. The quote was $600 so they were cheaper, surprisingly. It works great now.
Just curious if this was the right move.
I decided to go to the dealership, because most of the specialty shops suggested disabling the inter-lock.
For the price and time frame I believe you did the right thing,

As for the actual lock out solenoid, very, very seldom have it see one burnt up, or to the point that just re-lubing it did not solve its problem isntead.
Hence with the front relay working correctly with the shift lever against it, it allow the rear lock out solenoid to fire/pull back the lock lever to allow the car to be shifted out of reverse, and then once the car is out of park/behind the lock latch and off the front relay arm, this disacttives the rear lock out solenoid so it not burn up staying back full time isntead.
Short of that, then you can just wire back the lock arm so it not locking the shifter into park isntead.

As for a completely worn out C6 auto shifter assembly, that one is a new one to me that I have not seen such even on cars that have had over 100K miles . Broken shifter cables or worn out end cable grommets, as well as have to tweak/clean the front relay, or lube the rear soleniod, yes; but never the plastic gear parts of the shifter assembly itself worn to the point that is needed to replace instead. As for GM, then rebuild/clean/tweak nothing in the shifter assemblies, nor even replace just the shifter grommets if worn alone, so there standard SOP is to replace the entire shifter assembly with new cable as a complete unit if there is problem with the shifter assembly isntead.
