Default Clutch shimming / clearance?

Installing my Monster triple with a Q/T bell, I measured everything out and I'm at around 0.057" free play in the slave, Monster recommends 0.0625" - 0.200". I'd like to get little closer to the center of the spec, does anyone make shims to go between the bell and the torque tube?

Thinking in the wrong area and do not want to gap the bell housing to motor, or torque tube to back of bell housing,

If gap is too big, then you shim the slave forward on the torque tube to decrease the gap.

If gap is to small, then go back and make sure that you heated the flywheel to expand it so it will seat all the way against the crank flange correctly, that you have the clutch assembled correctly so it has the correct stake height, and then if still needed, you can either face the back of the slave cylinder, or the back side of the TB race and front of slave if you need that kind of room isntead.

Also, make sure that you have the TB spring/TB race compressed all the way down on the slave before you take measurements.

As for gap, your looking for .125" to .150", since as the pressure plate wears, the clutch fingers will move backwards toward the slave, and at .065" will only get about a half life out of the clutch until the clutch wears enough to cause the gap to go to zero, and the TB compressing the pressure plate fingers full time instead.

If you go to our Facebook page and check out the Videos section. We have a detailed video on the correct way to measure for a shim. We don't have it on Youtube so It's not letting me link you to it.

Thanks for all the replies. I spoke with Monster today and was assured that 0.057" is a little tighter than they prefer but should still be OK, even with wear. I have to drop the bell again so I will take a measurement of my original bell vs. the QT bell while it's out.

Good idea to check your factory bell. Just a random thought, you do have the plate that goes between the bell and block installed, correct? I'm not questioning your intelligence at all, but I have seen someone leave that out before.

Hi Matt, thanks for the reply. Sorry for the late reply, I was traveling for work all day yesterday.

Anyway, I pulled the QT bell on Monday night and checked it against the factory unit. I don't have a surface plate here to compare exactly but the QT bell looked to be about the same distance shorter as the plate, so it's not radically far off. I do have the plate installed but what you say about people leaving it out doesn't surprise me one bit!

if it's too close, the gap tightens more as the clutch wears, which could eventually lead to slipping. However, if the manufacturer says it's ok, then I guess it's ok

On my Monster LT-S Dual disc install the spec was 1/16" - 1/8" (.0625"-0.125") I measured mine to be circa 0.082" w/out any shimming. I would double check to make sure your flywheel is 100% seated and tthere is no OEM shims behind it. Also, the measurement is not the easiest to mesure exactly. Make sure you get repeatable values. I used a 12" scale flat across the fingers on the spring plate and measured with a caliper. Then subtracted the thickness of the scale (be careful not to bend it). Did this about 5-6x till i got repeatable #'s. For the Slave cyl. It was harder to get a consistant measurement. The throw out bearing can tilt a bit depanding on how you hold it alll the way back. 1st time measuing it to the case my values were all over the place. +/- .020". Dont rush and just get consistant meaurements, Once you are around +/-.005" you will be close enough. For me my range was total gap of 0.082-.087". Which is all within spec.
